Start a gouge angled to the workpiece

  1. Before firing the torch, hold the torch at approximately a 40° – 45° angle to the workpiece with the torch tip approximately 6 mm – 12 mm (1/4 in. – 1/2 in.) from the workpiece.

  2. Pull the trigger to get a pilot arc and transfer the arc to the workpiece.
  3. Stretch the arc to 25 mm – 32 mm (1 inch – 1-1/4 inches).
This image shows the torch with an arc stretch.
  4. Keep this position as you push the plasma arc in the direction of the gouge that you want to create.

  5. Change the position of the torch as necessary to get the gouge contour that you want.
    Note:

Refer to Guidelines for hand torch gouging. Keep at least a small distance between the torch tip and the molten metal to increase cartridge life and prevent damage to the torch.
